Farmer and Panda Algorithm Updates

In Feb of 2011, the New York Times published this article on how JC Penney was able to manipulate the search engine rankings for most of the products they sell, which may have lead to a better than average holiday season for JC Penney. Google is always working on updates to improve their search formulas, but after this story came out, Google released a change called "Farmer."
The Farmer algorithm update was specifically targeted at websites and marketers that use "link-farms," to create backlinks to websites. Proper Link Building is good for SEO, but the search engines intended for them to be real people posting links about great websites. As a result of the Farmer update, many of the websites that participated in this type of link building saw their natural rankings drop.
Panda was the second generation of algorithm changes. Not only are artificial backlinks devalued, a gradual change was occurring to devalue poor quality content. Perhaps you have been to websites that appear to be written in English, but are full of grammatical mistakes, and don't make much sense to the reader. This type of copy is frequently associated with blogs, blog comments, and articles that are stuffed with keywords and only serve the purpose to create a content backlink.
The Future of Google Panda Quality Control
We like to refer to Panda updates as a detailed set of quality controls. We applaud Google for taking action in this area and for trying to promote the proper methodology of online marketing. Google's Business Tool Box is another example of how that want to partner with your company in a mutually beneficial way.
Don't write content for search engines, write content for visitors.
Use Google Analytics or another backend reporting tool to measure how visitors are using your website.
Be an authority on the subject of your website.
Keep the design of your website interesting and clean.
Strategically use art and video to help tell your story.
Google doesn't use just algorithms to evaluate and score your website. People look at the website too. Granted, there are billions of websites and not billions of Google employees, but if your website is always prepared for a human inspection, you will always pass with flying colors.
